Why it's free
WalkOnJams started as a passion project to solve a real problem — getting the right song cued to the right moment for a kids' baseball team. It was never built to be a business, and charging for it would only get in the way of the thing that makes it useful: a growing, community-built catalog of walk-ons.
The value here is the community, not a paywall. Every walk-on, vote, and playlist is created by people like you. The more open the site is, the better that catalog gets for everyone. Putting it behind a price tag would shrink the very thing that makes it worth using.
We don't pay to stream music, so there's nothing to recoup. Playback and search run on your own Spotify Developer credentials, which you connect in Settings. That means no licensing costs flow through us — and nothing for us to pass on to you.
The one cost to be honest about
A few features need a Spotify Premium account — that's a subscription you pay to Spotify, not to us, and it unlocks:
- Add brand-new walk-ons from Spotify search
- In-browser playback
Everything else — claiming a walk-on, voting, playlists, teams, game-day mode — works on a free account with no Spotify connection at all.
What if costs go up?
Running the site is cheap today. If that ever changes, we'll be transparent about it and ask the community for help before we'd ever lock features away. We'd rather keep the doors open than turn this into a subscription.
